Neck Pain and Headaches.

Neck problems can have a huge impact on daily life, whether from pain, stiffness or immobility.  Pain can be a persistent ache, or sharp and stabbing and can be solely in the neck, or cause pain and numbness in the shoulder, arm or hand, or travel up and result in headaches.

There are numerous causes of neck pain, but it is usually related to spinal dysfunction (see more in Back Pain and Discs Problems) which results in the soft tissues supporting the neck and the spinal discs being put under strain.

Ageing is a factor and how much strain we have put on our neck through the years.  Repetitive movements through a daily activity or poor posture will strain the neck muscles, while injuries, such as whiplash, will directly damage the soft tissues of the neck.  When neck movement is inhibited, nerves can become impinged, directing the pain into the shoulders and arms.

Headaches are extremely common and can be caused by many lifestyle factors and vary greatly in severity, region and frequency.   Understanding what is causing your headaches is important.  Stress and posture can have a big influence and the overuse of the neck muscles due to repetitive strain, poor posture or injury can all result in headaches.  Migraines are not caused in this way, but are categorised as a neurological disorder, but some patients report symptoms alleviate with chiropractic and massage treatment.

“Even during treatment my neck appeared to ease, and immediately afterwards my headaches reduced and have continued to do so.   I have greater movement in my neck, and I can now look over my shoulder again to reverse my car”

How we help with neck pain and headaches?

We treat neck pain and headaches with a wide range of treatments and techniques.  Often the most effective form of treatment for neck pain and headaches is Chiropractic.  Using hands-on techniques, our chiropractors mobilise the joints in the neck, restoring movement and joint function, aiming to reduce strain on the surrounding tissues. Massage is also very effective on neck pain and headaches, especially in conjunction with the chiropractic treatment. MBST therapy may also be recommended in cases of joint or disc degeneration.
