Shockwave Therapy.
We offer radial shockwave therapy at Encompass Health in Cheltenham.
Shockwave (extracorporeal shockwave therapy – ESWT) is a non-invasive treatment, clinically proven to be effective on a wide range of chronic conditions, particularly tendon issues. It delivers acoustic impulses into the damaged area, causing ‘shockwaves’ within the tissue, designed to stimulate the body’s own healing processes.
Shockwave causes a pro-inflammatory response in the tissue being treated, increasing blood flow to the area and initiating this healing response.
Shockwave therapy is a safe and effective treatment for: Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles and Patella Tendinopathy, Trochanteric Bursitis, Tennis or Golfers Elbow, Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy, Biceps Tendinopathy, Frozen Shoulder, Hamstring Tendinopathy and Arthritis.
Generally delivered as a course of treatment and based on research and results, we recommend between 3-6 sessions, with at least a week between each. Shockwave is best combined with other modalities such as soft tissue work and dry needling (acupuncture). We address the whole musculoskeletal system, looking at what else might have influenced the damage and correct this alongside treating the painful area. Other therapies that could be combined with shockwave are chiropractic, physiotherapy and sports massage.
There are no major safety concerns associated with ESWT, and other than mild discomfort during treatment, it is common to have some immediate pain relief. Full results are likely to be seen after 2-3 months. It is well researched, with studies showing positive outcomes, concluding it as a highly effective therapy. Shockwave is also included in the NICE guidelines as a management option for chronic tendinopathies.
“I was recommended Shockwave for the tendinitis I’d been suffering with for ages. Immediately after treatment it felt so much better. It has continued to improve over the weeks. It is such a relief to not constantly notice the pain!”

If shockwave is not deemed appropriate for your condition or you are unable to have the treatment due to specific contraindications, High Power Laser may be a suitable alternative.
