Back Pain & Disc Problems.
Back pain is the largest single cause of disability in the UK and low back pain being the most prevalent. It is most commonly caused by the degeneration and dysfunction of the spinal joints or intervertebral discs. Back pain can be extremely debilitating and vary from a constant aching pain, to a sharp pain that takes your breath away, but can also result in buttock and leg pain.
Age is a contributing factor, but back pain is often accelerated by poor posture, a sedentary lifestyle and repetitive movements. If your back or neck isn’t moving freely it puts strain on muscles and ligaments as they overwork to protect the joint, this can cause pain and damage to the soft tissues and over time can lead to degeneration of the joint/s.
Discs problems can arise for a number of reasons, but usually stemming from stresses on the spine and vertebral joints. Discs help to stabilise the spine, cushioning between the vertebra, and allow comfortable movement. Put under excess pressure, the disc health can deteriorate and result in a prolapse (bulge/slipped disc), most commonly in the neck and low back.

How we help with back pain and disc problems?
We use hands-on therapies to improve and restore function within the spinal joints, aiming to facilitate easier movement and take pressure off the discs. This comprises numerous techniques including chiropractic joint manipulation. We may also use the high power laser or recommend MBST treatment, which is very effective on both joint and disc health. MBST directly targets cartilage degeneration in order to stimulate cellular regrowth. It does this by transferring energy to the specific area in order to regenerate the damaged tissue cells of the spinal column and the intervertebral discs. See our page on osteoarthritis for more details about treating arthritis of the spine.
