Osteoarthritis is a musculoskeletal disease and the most common joint ailment in the world.
It is often referred to as wear and tear arthritis, caused by the cartilage in a joint gradually wearing away. The slow degeneration of the protective cartilage causes joints to be painful and stiff and makes movement difficult. Muscles and ligaments have to work harder to move the joint and over time, they can become damaged too.
Along with the soft tissue damage, the bones themselves can develop bony growths/spurs.
All this results in pain and swelling, which restricts the flexibility of the joint and leads to a loss of mobility, disabilities and problems in everyday life.
How it develops:
Arthritis can occur in any joint, but most regularly seen in weight-bearing joints such as the knees and hips, as well as the low back, neck and hands.
Bones are connected to each other via flexible joints. In order to prevent the bones from rubbing against each other, the contact areas are covered in a smooth, shock absorbing cartilaginous tissue. However, since cartilage has a slow metabolism, it takes a long time to regenerate. When the regeneration process is disturbed, elasticity decreases at a constant pace and the joint cartilage becomes less resilient.
